Description
The Wild Service tree, known as the Sorbus torminalis, is a lovely native tree that is sometimes referred to as the Chequer Tree.
When young it grows in a column shape and graduates to a broad oval when mature.
It will blossom white flowers in spring that give way to sharp tasting fruits in the autumn.
Because it is coarse rooted, it is only worth planting as an established containerised tree to insure success.
It thrives in most free draining soils but being a woodland plant, it doesn’t like it much under the glare of the sun for too long.
